Keywords: head and neck, carcinoma, radiation therapy, complications
The effects of radiation therapy on normal tissues are divided into acute and chronic effects. While acute complications are observed during and immediately after the course of radiation therapy especially in mucosal sites and skin, chronic complications are observed after months to years after radiation therapy especially in slowly proliferating tissues. Most of the acute complications are temporary and self-limited unless substantial radiation dose has been administered. Late complications are chronic and permanent and even may be progressive. The aim of this review is to describe the potential complications of radiation therapy on normal tissues of the head and neck and treatment approaches
