Venous thromboembolism is one of the most frequent and serious complication of cancer that cause life treatening morbidity and mortality. Mucinous adenocarcinoma of gastrointestinal tract, lung and pancreas are most frequent cause of thromboembolism. Beside these malignancies, other solid tumors, myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative hematological malignancies may also cause thromboembolic disorders. The described underlying patophysiological mechanisms are hypercoagulability, vascular endothelial damage and venous stasis. In this review article, we discussed the recent developments in pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of thromboembolism in cancer.
