Keywords: k-ras mutations, gastrointestinal cancer
Ras oncogenes have significant role in transformation from premalignant to malignant phases. Ras mutations especially K-ras mutations are frequently detected in gastrointestinal tumors. Point mutations at ras protein are mostly found at codon 12, 13 and 61 and these genetic alterations cause a reduction in the GTPase activity while retaining the binding capacity. Several pathways using ras as a therapeutic target are under investigation.
