TNM STAGING IN CANCER AND THE ROLE OF SURGEON

The role of surgeon in the treatment of cancer depends on the type of cancer. Surgeon can play role on diagnosis, staging, curative surgical treatment, local control of disease or palliation. Accurate staging is one of the most important step of the treatment of cancer patient. Surgeon has the principal role of staging of solid tumours. While TNM classification has been used widely for cancer staging, other classification have lost their popularity. Oncologic surgeons must know very well the TNM classification. In this paper, basic principles and recent advances in the TNM classification were reviewed.
