THE EFFECTS OF CHILDHOOD CANCER ON SIBLINGS: A GENERAL PERSPECTIVE

Although the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer have a significant impact on families, the literature demonstrates that this illness experience has an even greater effect on healthy siblings of children with cancer. Siblings are particularly vulnerable to adjustment difficulties such as depression, anger, anxiety, feelings of guilt and social isolation. This article discusses the effects of childhood cancer to healthy siblings and highlight the nursing interventions that are effective in supporting siblings throughout the illness period.
