The purpose of this study was to determine the role of betaxolol in the prevention of radiation induced acute and late toxicity of the liver. Fifty-two female albino Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. The first group (n=18) was given a total of 20 Gy radiation to upper abdomen in two equal fractions with an interval of 3 days. Betaxolol HCl was administered (4 mg/kg, i.p.) 120 minutes before each fraction. Betaxolol was substituted for saline solution (%0.9 NaCl, i.p) in the second group (n=18). The third group (n=8) was not irradiated however saline solution was administered as the second group. The fourth group (n=8) was not irradiated but betaxolol HCl similar to others. Half of the rats of each group was sacrified 8 hours after the second fraction for detection of acute effects and apoptosis, the remaining rats were sacrified 60 days after second fraction for detection of late effects.
