Keywords: bisphosphanates, bone metastases, hypercalcemia
Bisphosphanates are potent inhibitors of tumor-induced osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. The clinical use of bisphosphanates has increased dramatically during the past five years. They now constitute the standard treatment for cancer hypercalcemia. Bisphosphanate use is a major therapeutic advance in the management of the skeletal morbidity caused by metastatic breast cancer or multiple myeloma. The use of bisphosphanates to prevent bone metastases remain experimental.
