Keywords: budd-chiari syndrome, factor v leiden, thrombosis, child
We presented a case of 4-year-old boy with Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) who developed inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis. An exhaustive etiological investigation to detect a procoagulable state was negative except for heterozygous for factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation, a factor associated with resistance to activated protein C. FVL mutation is known to be a common, high risk factor for thrombosis and probably the procoagulable state responsible for many cases of idiopathic BCS. This factor should be routinely investigated in any patient with Budd-Chiari syndrome.
