It has been known for decades that stem cells with limited differentiation potential are present in post-natal tissues of mammals, and adult stem cells are already clinically. Recent studies report that adult tissues might contain cells with pluripotent characteristics. Stem cells are being investigated for their potential use in regenerative medicine. A series of remarkable studies suggested that adult stem cells undergo novel patterns of development by a process to as transdifferentiation or plasticity. Especially repairing the vulnerable and normally non-regenerative tissues and organs such as neurons and heart tissue by stem cells are going to be promising treatment modalities in the future. In this review article, we summarized the recent developments in stem cell characteristics and practical application in clinical area by using our own instutitional experience.
