Keywords: coagulation system
In 1905, Morawitz reviewed the literature on blood coagulation and he concluded that plasma prothrombin was converted to thrombin when calcium and thromboplastin were present. The thrombin then converted plasma fibrinogen to fibrin. Remaining thrombin was neutralized by antithrombin to yield metathrombin. This "classic theory" persisted for 40 years. Then the importance of FVIIa-TF pathway was understood and mechanisms of coagulation cascade were also became clear by the discovery of TFPI. Cell-based model of coagulation is an important step toward understanding the hemostatic process . This model shows us that the "intrinsic" and "extrinsic" pathways are in fact not redundant systems, but operate in parallel on different cell surfaces.
