Brain metastasis is a poor prognostic sign in lung cancers as well as other cancers. Patients die due to neurological complications in about one month if they are not treated. Surgery for metastases may provide survival advantage especially in solitary brain metastases. In this study, we evaluated 49 patients retrospectively. First group consisted of 30 lung cancer patients with brain metastases who received cranial radiotherapy and second group consisted of 19 patients with same diagnosis who underwent surgery and subsequently received cranial radiotherapy. Median overall survival after diagnosis of brain metastases was 7±1.3 months (%95CI 4.4-9.6) in surgery plus radiotherapy group and 3±0.7 months (%95CI 1.7-4.3) in only radiotherapy group. Survival rates at 6 months and 1 year were calculated as 53% and 16%, 13% and 1%, respectively. There was statistically significant difference regarding survival between two groups (P=0.015). In conclusion, surgery for brain metastases in selected patients provide palliation and survival advantage.
