Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) is a metabolic disease adversely affecting the several systems in body. Recently there have been an increased number of studies on its effects on haemotologic system. In this study, it has been attempted at demonstrating on thrombocyte membrane sodium-potassium ATPase(Na K ATPase) enzyme activity in IDDM and to compare with the enzyme level in healthy children. The IDDM and the control groups consisted of 14 cases. The mean time for diagnosis of IDDM in 14 cases was 4.5±1.2 years. Thrombocyte enzyme activity was measured by the Fiske-Subbarrow method. The results were expressed as mmol Pi/h/mg protein. The mean thrombocyte Na/K ATPase level was 1.02±0.16 mmol Pi/h/mg protein determined. Enzyme levels in diabetic children were significantly reduced as compared with those of the controls (p< 0.001). The findings of the present study indicated that the decrease in Na-K ATP ase activity in thrombocyte membrane might be responsible for thrombocyte dysfunction in children with IDDM and this decreased activity could be associated with the duration of diabetes.
