Major depression has negative impact on the cancer patient's quality of life and impairs his/her ability to participate in treatment. "Normal" psychological reactions to cancer may play role in development of depression and disguise its appearances. Denial, rage, bargain, depression and adaptation are stages of this reaction. Denial may result in delay in searching for medical help or may impair treatment compliance. Psychological difficulties in handling a mortal disease, may cripple those nearby the patient as well as the medical team. Anger may be a anormal reaction or a symptom of depression, and may be projected on those nearby. Irritability is more common in hospitalized cancer patients and it is reported that it responds to antidepressant treatment.
